Cookie Policy
1. What Are Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser. They are widely used to make websites function properly and provide information to site owners. We also use browser local storage, a similar technology that stores data directly on your device.
2. How We Use Cookies & Storage
Walking by the Word uses a minimal set of cookies and storage mechanisms. We believe in transparency and keeping our data footprint as small as possible.
Essential
- Language preference — We may store your selected language (English or Spanish) to provide a consistent browsing experience across visits.
- Analytics consent preference — When you accept or reject analytics on our site, your choice is stored in your browser's local storage (under the key
wbtw_consent_v1). This is not a cookie — it is a local storage entry that stays entirely on your device. It allows us to remember your preference so you are not asked again on every visit. This preference expires after 365 days, after which you will be asked again.
Functional
- My List / Watchlist — Your saved episodes are stored using your browser's localStorage. The stored list data remains entirely on your device, and there is no cloud synchronization or server-side storage of your watchlist contents. If you have accepted analytics, adding or removing items from your watchlist may generate limited analytics event metadata (such as content identifiers), but the full watchlist is never transmitted.
Analytics
- Google Analytics (GA4) — We use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand general site traffic patterns. These analytics services are only activated after you accept analytics through the consent choice described below. If you accept, Google Analytics may set cookies to distinguish unique visitors and track page views. We use this limited analytics and technical information solely to understand aggregate traffic patterns and improve our Service.
- Data redaction — We configure Google Analytics data redaction to help redact recognized email addresses and the value of the
qURL query parameter before analytics data is sent. This is a best-effort protection; it does not guarantee that all sensitive data patterns are detected.
Our analytics implementation is designed not to send personal information such as search text, contact form contents, names, email addresses, or phone numbers as part of analytics event data.
Your Consent Choice
The first time you visit our site (or after your previous preference has expired), a compact consent card appears offering two equally prominent options:
- Accept — Analytics services (Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics) will be loaded for your session and future visits.
- Reject — No analytics scripts will be loaded and no analytics cookies will be set by our integration. Your preference is stored so you will not be asked again.
Before you make a choice, and if you reject analytics, our integration does not produce Google Analytics network requests or set analytics cookies.
If you disable analytics after Google Tag Manager has already loaded on the current page, we update the analytics consent state to denied. Future page loads will not load Google Tag Manager while your denied preference remains valid. Scripts already loaded may remain present in the current document until you navigate away.
3. Third-Party Cookies
- YouTube — Our video content is delivered via YouTube embeds. When you play a video (and, in Safari on Mac and on iPhone and iPad, as soon as a video page prepares its player, before you press "Watch Now"), YouTube (Google) may set its own cookies to provide the video service, track playback, and improve their services. These cookies are governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
4. What We Do NOT Use
We want to be explicit about the types of cookies and tracking we do not employ in our current analytics implementation:
- No advertising cookies — Our current analytics implementation does not deploy Google Ads advertising tags, a Conversion Linker, or remarketing tags. Advertising consent states remain denied in our configuration.
- No behavioral profiling — We do not build profiles of your browsing behavior
- No retargeting — We do not track you across other websites
- No data selling — Cookie data is never sold to third parties
- No aggressive tracking — We do not use fingerprinting or invasive tracking technologies
5. How to Manage Cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:
- View what cookies are stored
- Delete individual or all cookies
- Block cookies from specific or all websites
- Set preferences for first-party vs. third-party cookies
You can also change your analytics preference at any time using the "Manage cookies" option in the footer of every page, without needing to clear your browser data.
Please note that disabling cookies may affect the functionality of some features, such as language persistence.
To clear your watchlist data, you can clear your browser's local storage for this website through your browser's developer tools or settings.
6. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
